Ice Arena here we go again medicine right I have a look at the schedule when you on any of the Edison's earlier I was just on Lily Spanish Edison you know if they if she showed a the sample from Edison as far as like the template cuz I don't have access. I don't think she saw her she had a template they were all our slides are you like the login information pamphlet I don't think so okay she was just working on this but I didn't I mean she hadn't touched on any of that it's calming down honesty. It's coming down on me Rain On Me alright it's 2 come everyone from Edison school district this isn't over you for canvas distance learning it looks like we have about six or seven folks here go ahead and Jump Right In if anybody comes in late will get them caught up a couple things about today's training it's probably going to be maybe an hour so you can expect about an hour if you need to ask a question today we're going to be using the chat button on the bottom look at that in your resume I'm also asking if you can please keep your microphones turned on mute that way we don't have any distractions or any anybody talking over each other okay so welcome I'm going to jump right in my name is Michael Hernandez and I work for Kern County Superintendent of Schools we also have Karina you're as well say hi Karina she is going to be helping helping us today she is going to be assisting in the zoom chat if there's any questions that you have she can help us that okay so I'm going to jump right in once again a couple things about our Zoom room today looks like we have about eight bucks now but it didn't keep your microphone on you you have a question please use the function and please know that everyone can see so please be respectful with your communication video on or off I'm going to keep mine on the whole time so it's totally up to you a couple other buttons that you would find in your zoomroom obviously on the bottom left is the mute and unmute button and then the video cameras on your video on and off there are few other buttons If you have not seen these yet but this tell you how many books are in our room right now if you click participants but it will take you to some other icons like hand-raise yes know if you all the way over to the right two more ill have a thumbs-up and thumbs-down button and here's where you would type in your question do you have any today on the chat function box so those are all the things that you can use in our Zoomer today if you're good with that can you ever give me a thumbs up on your find the icon and will keep going here it wouldn't find the thumbs up there we go see you thank you Sarah all right so I am wondering how many of us are students in here if you could raise your hand if your student we students in here everybody who's a student we got some parents also so this training is for students and for parents so I'm going to show you how log onto canvas I'm going to show you what it looks like what you logging on and I'm also going to show you how to navigate your class alright so here we go so let me start off by saying you what is this is learning distance learning is whenever you are in your location and features in a different location and you are learning via either Zoom or via something online so that's distance learning examples where this is funny right now so I'm my location near me your location and I'm going to teach you about 10 minutes so that's distance run okay there are cover is everything in canvas today so canvas is an online platform that Edison is using for distance running this year in what I'm going to show you is the computer version of Candace so this is something that you would use with your laptop on your desktop computer I want you to know that canvas is definitely the world's fastest growing online platform why everyone's doing this is burning right now everyone's using it so it's very popular a lot of colleges use it so it is a growing in the use of it though I'm not going to cover today how to use the app on canvas I want you to know that there is a nice app available to you so if you have a cell phone whether the iPhone or a Android there is an app available using icanvas if you download the app on iTunes Store on the Android store there are two kinds of apps one is a student app and one is a are both have different colors isn't red and the account one isn't blue a nice thing I will say about the app is this their mobile or easy-to-use if you forget to turn in your homework and you are on your way someplace and totally forgot guess what you could split your phone and you can submit your assignment right from your phone that's what I really like about the app the other thing I like about the app is any parents the communication has done very well you can raise anytime so about is something you want to take a look at so if that's available on the app all right so I'm going to show you a classroom now let me go into my canvas classroom can you log into your canvas classroom Sirius the first thing you're going to see now you might not see a fourth grade class cuz you're not in 4th grade but this is a practice class this is a sample class that I'm going to show you your class is going to look a berry similar to this let me start off by showing you what is in your this is what we call the dashboard it's the homepage okay so what you going to notice right away is something that looks like a big Square it looks like have three different ones these are called tile and that I was just another name for a class that's all it is so I have three different classes right here for me if I am in Middle School you might have four different classes you might have different classes that we know how many subjects. okay so just know the person going to see is your grade and your classes okay I'm going to navigate all the way over to the right over here and you notice I see a little to do a button this is everything that is coming either up on things that I need to finish or do so I can click on this if I'm done with us and it will go away but these are kind of like reminders for myself about my class so anything that comes up over here on things about my class for the the bottom below the to-do list is any recent feedback that recently back means that the teacher has given you something to some feedback on an assignment or maybe being a test she's taken and any feedback would be right in here maybe upgrade it was like I didn't do well my last practice for my math class so I got a 0 out of 7 so that's an even answering back to the last button that I'll show you here on this phone age is something called you grades if I click on that view grade that will show me the grades for all of my classes okay so if I click on that right now there's no reason there but let me show you what that looks like where can I buy this shows me all the classes that I have and over here it will show me my grave right now there's no great source Gordon started yet but that's where you that's where you would go to find out your password anytime I want go back to the home the home button actually on this one is called a dashboard to see a little gas gauge looks like a little speedometer in a car that's the dashboard won't stay so what I'm going to show you today is everything is there a movie called the toolbar it's located on the left side of your home screen everything that's in blue I'm going to go over all of these icons and then I'm going to go into a class for you and show you how this is so me, count the very first thing you should look at when you get into your canvas classroom is to highlight this account in a little side a menu comes so this side menu allows you to do different things the first thing that allows you to do is to change your profile setting so I can go here to my profile setting if I could go on that it will take me to do everything about me so I can change all this information that's in here I could change the picture you notice if there's a student here if I want to change this picture I just click on this little pencil pretty quick and easy to use I can upload a picture that already has I can take a picture or I can choose our upload a gravatar and grab the car is basically a bitmoji that is if you want to have your picture as a pet monkey so that's how the change the picture if I go over to the right and I edit profile here all of the rest of the information will be a drop-down and I can plug in anything about be for my phone she see the biography there this one says about the student is 88 years old and a third grade then I would come over here to save and then my profile with you say the next thing in account settings I want to show you is the actual button assist settings so the settings button the default on the far right is this is the email that is going to be used from the teacher to you to communicate so right now all of your email addresses will be your student email address the one that you have been given from the school parents that are I'm here this is important button because what is Miss what might be missing as you would look to see if your email address is also on here if your email is not on here if you'd like to add it I would go to the plus sign admire melchior and then I would register email then what that does is it passive communication are only going to your student it also goes directly to you as well you can also put in your cell phone so you can plug in your cell phone number and you would put in your carrier and you register your cell phone number which what that happened to do is send you text messages whenever communication is coming so that's that feature for setting I know I share with you a few minutes ago about the app that's only on the show you about the app today so if you have the app on your phone and you download it you walk to the instructions on the app and you want to go to the account settings and you want to go all the way down here to where it says QR code QR for mobile lucky if I click on that it's going to take me to a QR code display so if I click on the word proceed you can see that a q r code comes up I wouldn't take my app on my phone and it you are code and what happens is your account from your canvas account syncs up with your app on your phone or your tablet so it says it takes away you having to put in a username password all you need to do is use. I'm going to keep going down on the toolbar when I go back down to dashboard in a gospel is what we started how's my classes it going down courses that one that looks like a book it looks like I have my courses just listed there that's all it does like keep going down it goes to calendar and it goes right to a calendar calendar is a function because it allows you to put things in your calendar that are important things are coming up the teacher can also put assignments that are here so if I want to add something to my calendar all I need to do is go is the date and double click and then I would add all the stuff that I want to on my calendar and I would submit and then it would be stored here on my calendar you can change the view so I can look at still month you an agenda of you for my calendar and I can also change the month right over here spoke to a couple of months from now and find a date that supports me I can go date and put something in my calendar all right next button down is going to be the inbox so the inbox here looks like a little piece of pie going to Baby trash can or something this is basically like a in an email so in an email this one's different than your regular email in the sense that it only goes to athletes to the teacher so students that are on here this is not an email to be using to email your friends or your grandma and grandpa because it won't go anywhere it will only go directly to the teacher so this emails are a bit different in a row okay so I'm not going to show you how to navigate I'm sure you are all experts in using email but let me show you if I wanted to respond to this emails very simple I click on the message I would come over here here's the message I'm here and there's two ways to respond if I hover over and you see the word reply come up or I could come up here to the workers black if I want to create a new message to my teacher I would just compose a new message that was right there I want to select the right course so you might have a few different classes to use you want to make sure you're sending it to the right teacher to paint a classroom what is subject in the newest type in a regular message just like that a couple different things about this email messaging system in canvas canvas is very interactive and it uses a lot of videos how to use a lot of videos you don't have to get used to videos but it has the capabilities of these videos so the reason why I say that is email is mainly using text and using words to respond in writing there might be times in your classroom where the teacher is going to ask you to send a video message so a video messaging is much like using just your your recorder and your phone is sending a message with the video this has the capabilities of sending video messaging that's located on the bottom right or left when I hear you see the little play button so if I quit that play button my screen is going to show the Crown you notice my virtual background just went away so you can see the back of my wall right now one thing I want to remind everybody about using video and that is something called digital citizenship what is that digital citizenship means that when you are recording yourself on video to be appropriate with your dress your language how you respond and you definitely want to have a wall behind you and have anybody behind you making funny faces when you make your videos especially because this was going to record your teacher so using that digital citizenship is very important so the simple start recording send me a countdown I'm ready to record first video going to my teacher thank you so much to be great year and then I'm done and then I sent it pretty simple pretty simple to use and that is the difference in this kind of email box that Junior classroom okay I'm going to keep going down the toolbar I'm going to go to something looks like a TV with a play button and some little antennas down the bottom something called Studio so is every video that you made is stored in studio so these are all the videos that we have been making for our trainings for all of our districts in any one of these videos I can sort them I could delete them or anytime you create a video that's where it lives so let me show you how to create a video pretty simple you go up to the top that's record book on that but nervous too kind of videos I can record I can report a screen capture video a screen capture is a video where you are showing the screen and you want everybody only to see your screen you don't want anybody see your your face and you want to talk out loud what you're showing with this ring a lot of students use screen capture when they're doing projects maybe they're using a PowerPoint maybe they're showing a paper that they wrote sand they just want to show the paper but not show themselves so that's a screen capture the other one is a webcam capture I just showed you kind of what that looks like right away when I click that button you see the back of my wall there if I want to start a recording I click on that 321 it'll do a countdown and then you can start recording and then I finish if I didn't like that video I would start over and I can always reset my video Alexa create a video and you don't like it you don't like the way it came out you can always delete your videos so that's looking here in the three buttons I click on that and I delete media right there and then the videos come another button up top is the add button so you can add any videos from your computer to your studio Library here so if I click on the add button and I want to fight the video that's located on my laptop I would go and browse the files and find the video and I would click on it and then I would upload the video If there is a YouTube video that you want to add to your studio would go find that YouTube video and you would add the lake right here on where that video lives that URL code the leak and I would add it to my studio Library video short there's one other button that I think is important especially when organizing your videos and that is the last collection button so this plus collection button if I click on that what it does is it allows you to make it for your videos you see all these videos right here all these videos are not organized they're all just random videos that we've been making and if I forgot where my video is if it's going to be pretty hard to go and search through all these videos especially if I'm in a hurry so I do recommend you create a collection and you start remembering what video you made for what class I'm so you can see some examples here I made an art project folder all of my art videos of being there I I label this one history videos or anything I do for history class is going to go in and so forth so these are that way you don't see him all like this so that's that button right there it says collection the last button I want to show you on the toolbar is that help button anytime you get stuck or you need help if you click on I hope there's a lot of resources here for you you can ask your teacher a question here there's a resources for parents there's a guy that talks about how to navigate campus that's located here so that's all in the outfit I'm going to stop there I'm going to go back to the to the dashboard I showed you everything in the stool bar right now let me pause there and see if there's any questions before I show you a crossbow anybody have any questions so far let me show you what a classroom I'm going to click on this English class around here all the classes look again they look very similar so the first thing going to notice is the grade and what the class title this is an English class by scroll down you're going to see a couple of buttons that look a little different so if somebody looks like a class introduction weekly lessons to reading tools and something called technical look a little laptop on them before one of those I'm going to show you some other buttons that are new here one of them is called modules Tomatoes is everything inside the classroom and the next one is Graves the great shows you the grades only for this classroom so if I'm clicking on grades here it's only going to show me the grades for my English class El Amigo here we go to class introduction it's going to show some things about the class right up top there when I click on that so you see everything that looks like it has a paper next to it that's just information and when you go over here when you cover over it you can see there's some kind of discussion all of these little buttons mean something different and if you just hover over it will tell you what it is let's look at what this class is about so if I look at teachers welcome I click on it tell me everything about the teacher you might have a video you might have some information about the class their contact information right here and on all of these pages is always on the bottom Rite Aid next button the next button is like me to just go to the very next page star next to the next page and then what you'll see is more information about the class so you see classroom expectations you'll see maybe a video here and I'm going to go to my next now I get to this section where it said it wanted me to do something so on this one it says introduce yourself using the video so I can record myself in the canvas studio video or I can show you the reply hello so I can do down here at quick reply look what happens a text box opens and I would follow the directions what's my name favorite hobby I am done I would go down here to the blue button that says post reply and not then goes back to my teacher so anything that you have to submit it's going to tell you to submit an assignment or do something send to your teacher go to the next button and here's more information about the class if you ever get lost you can always goes back to the left I didn't use the home button when I go to the home button always goes back to the very beginning of where I started so the home button is your friend if you get lost and go back on yourself back at the beginning when we started now let me show you what it looks like for some lessons if I click on lessons each of these Pages being something so on the left side looks like there's just a page there another page look at this one this one looks good this one looks like there is no sign there because there's a little pencil with those papers that looks like I have to write something so if I look all the way down it looks like I have one two three assignments on this page are this week is this is organized by week so this is Week 1 Bears week 2 if I scroll down everything in week 2 here is week 3 everything I week for you so you can see what is coming up what's this what's next week and what's the following week so let me click on week 1 overview so I put on this but this tells me basically what I'm running it during the week it gives me three different stories that I'm listening and learning about it also gives me some objectives and some things I need to do with these stories here but keep going down the bottom and tells me what standards of learning and there's the next button on the bottom that means I'm going to go to the next page so what do the next page it takes you to my first story of the week if I click on this video it will start reading every when the first story in this module is called as fast as words can fly you will need to read and listen to the text before going on to the next page I don't want that go but sometimes this will be the right points to a book that you have to read or sometimes video that you would just looked at and have someone read out loud to you if I scroll down is another video I can watch Avengers the next street over here there is a button up here on the top right I do want to show you really quickly called immersive reader and if I click on that buddy Mercer reader what it does is it takes every the page that I was just looking at it allows somebody to read out loud to me if that's what I want to use that but so this is the page I was just on it took away the videos it just only brought over the text that I was reading and if I go to the bottom and press play Close book one book one as fast as words could fly learning objectives so there's some options here where I could change the speed of the reading I could change who is reading out loud to me some other button you're on the right I could change the text size make it bigger and larger I can change the font if I don't like the way the font looks the other thing is you know when we read for a while on the computer you ice 10 to get tires at least mine to this is the default which is going to be a black or white background with black letters or you can change the color of the background which easier on your eyes if you're reading I'm not sure which one you would like but you can kind of play around with that a little bit and see which one you like to see which ones better when you're reading a couple other options or some grammar options here I can click this button if I want to see the syllables broken up by words or if I want to click on only highlighting the foods in a different color the last option in immersive reader is the Focus so far we want to look at one line at a time I could do that two lines at a time and then five months at a time last line Pakistan there a dictionary is meant for everything that's a word that maybe you don't understand and I do if I have picture dictionary on if I go to this word on your characters it shows me pictures of what characters are so characters in the stories those are people animals different characters from a book or story if I come up here and I don't know how to pronounce that word I can click on listen somebody comes out and reach out to me here is I can have anything translated if I need it translated so I can pick any language that's listed in here and I can translate a word if I need to alter the document if I need to just buy a click of a button translate the whole document so this is available for all the pages on canvas it's up here called immersive reader so you'll see that on all you all your pages just know that that's available to you all right let me see you how to submit an assignment I'm going to go back to the home button here stance I'm going to to something that my teacher wants back from remember that looks like a paper pencil and if I hover over it it's going to say assignment so looks like I have a few assignments here I want to click on one assignment that the teacher wants back for me anytime the teacher wants an assignment from you you're going to see a blue box in the top right-hand corner that says submit assignment so I would definitely read me the directions so on this assignment it looks like there's no due date but it's worth ten points and it the teacher tells me how they want the assignments submitted to the instructions on this one it says choose two out of three tasks so if I don't like the first one I could use a second and third one I can take two out of the three okay so if I go here at to submit assignment on the click that button and look what there's a box that comes up that tells me how do I want to submit an assignment so the first option is if I want to upload a file so if I have a award document I've been working on go to my computer and choose the file and find it let's say this is my homework assignment I click on that and open and then it adds it to my file upload and then I come down here to the blue button that says submit assignment and I'm disappointed and get stronger the other option is I can go to text entry which means that I can type in any  in this box here and I could submit my assignment that way that's another way to turn in a in a sentence Google Docs don't you using any Google accounts are Google Docs if you want to link into a Google doc that you've made Google documents you would authorize your Google account here you would go press the button lock in with your Google account and then your accounts will be sent to me media you can up any videos that you have already showed you how to use Studio Number studio is where all those videos and store that you made so if your teacher wants you to upload a video you could click studio and find a video that you made or you come over here and record a new video to submit an assignment so that's how you stood me up and then the last one here is Google Drive so he does you are using Google really quick just authorize your Google account you have me walk in one time and then when you know you have submitted an assignment I'm going to go back all the way up here I haven't turned in this assignment yet but let me show you what it looks like if I turned it in let's say I'm going to just use this as my assignment I know this is not the right answer but let me show you what happens when I do that I submit the assignment I have some confetti and some thumbs up saying that my Simon has been successfully submitted that's how you know that your assignment has gone to your teacher the other way you know is on the top right-hand corner you right here that you have submitted an assignment if they'll see the date and time if you put down here I'll give you details about what you turned in okay if you need to redo an assignment if you need a friend something and you made a mistake you can always go back to the blue and resubmit an assignment and then you turn something back in okay I'm on the bottom of that you will see your grade for that assignment that you turned in so the teacher with great it and you would get something back so looks like this assignment was worth 5 Points I got five points if you can save great job and it was worth 5 Points so I got all my points on this week if I resubmitted an assignment my score in the second column on here so that's what so that's how you turn in an assignment when you go to show you grades so when I click on the grey button River this is great for your entire class for English it's the grades only for the class that you are in so here are all the assignments that I have for this classroom let's say I got a score of 10 out of 10 on the first two assignments and if I went all the way down the bottom it'll tell you what your grade is so I got 20 points out of 20 points in the right now I have a hundred percent or my place so red button works it's a little bit different than the green button on the home page or the dashboard remember on the dash or you can come over here and get your grades as well but when I click on this one this is a great all my classes the other way showed you each assignment grades for that specific class but that's the difference. All right so I showed you the quick overview of can I want to show you how to log on but does anybody have any questions on canvas what it looks like how to navigate anything right now before I show you how to log on we all good I want to go back so a couple tips about learning digital learning definitely find find a place that works for you that's what I would suggest that needs to be quiet I'm definitely you want to be away from distractions parents that are on here definitely monitoring the the sign so make sure they're getting done and use that bad calendar you schedule your own assignments do some goal setting we know that distance learning is going to be mobile so there's different places to learn whether be on the floor in your bag out of Des you got to change it up to make it work for you so that's when we definitely recommend for the learning environment couple other tips prepare a weekly schedule again I would go back to that calendar you know what what's what's it going to be a sign because you could see the schedule you're going to be able to see what's in your classroom so look at the rest of that time and then if you are ever struggling or are you are not understanding something definitely steps of the school we talked to the teacher and make sure you get reach out for help okay so here are the things that's expected in Edison I talk to you at the beginning. your teacher is going to be logging on you're going to have some live in a Russian so this is going to happen Haley you're going to get a schedule that tells you when you are going to log on and when your teacher is going to come online teacher so Dennis is going to be taken every day as well here's how you log on to your classes you can go to the Edison website the first step and I'm going to show you that Epson website here in a second when you go to the Edison website what you're going to do is you're going to find schools on the Edison website and locate the school where your son or daughter goes soon as if you're on your way you can look at the school that you go to Weather that he wood on Edison Middle School Edison school district when you open up your school this is open up to or what if you go over to the cabin you're going to see already on the district website that there is an icon for canvas if you click on that icon for canvas is going to take you right to your class however there is one step that you need you need to be able log on so once you go to the website and you find this button that says campus it's going to direct you to a log on page guess what you will need your Google login account please remember this is the Google account that you have been assigned to buy Edison it's not your personal one if you made one that was not going to work so you were going to need your Gmail account that was given to you about school here's an example of what it looks like and then you're going to know it's the right one because it's going to be at Edison. K12. CA. Us your passwords it says here you're going to be a birthday it must be eight digit so if your birthday is in the month of June is going to be 06 to begin with and then the four-year here's an example down here of what a house would look like if my birthday is on July 5th 2012 07 03 2012 if you have any questions about I lost my password or I lost my username please reach out to the school they can help you reset your username and password but this might remind you what it might be you might try a few things maybe this will jog your memory to see what it is in case you forgot here is the contact information for the school Orangewood going to Orangewood you're going to contact Glasgow or here's an email address and the phone number I'm going to Edison Miss Barton is a contact for canvas and there's her email as well as the phone number Leslie here here's my contact in case you are ever stuck on cam you have any questions there is my email there is my phone number you can reach out to me and I can have to get some canvas questions with you if you need extra support I want to go back to this I'm going to pause right now I'm going to open up any questions we have only about 10 smokes in here so if you need to ask out loud you can unmute yourself you can ask or you can type in the chat I'm here to help support you so let me know what your or something that you want me to review again right nobody good everybody has you know the log on need your arm Google login go to the website it's super easy Addison does a great job on the web page remember you could have schools that you are going to and you click on it and what you're going to see is a student button click on the student button and there is the cameras back on okay if I clicked on that it's been a you signed in with my Google account and here's where you would put in your Google account no I don't have a Edison Google account so mine won't work but yours will face what I recommend is to go and sign in there might be already some classes. I'm not sure when they turn on classes for you but you would want to go check to see what's in there right now if you have access simple.
